⛵ Alaska — Sailing Resources
Alaska offers world-class cruising, especially in Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage (Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Petersburg). Summers are busy with transient yachts; winters are quiet. Infrastructure is limited compared to the Lower 48. No mandatory statewide boating education card, but courses are strongly recommended.

Marinas & Harbors
Most sailboat activity in Alaska is along the Inside Passage in Southeast Alaska. Transient moorage in summer can be competitive. Here are key options:
- City of Ketchikan Harbors (Ketchikan) — Multiple harbors (Bar Harbor, Thomas Basin, etc.). Good facilities for visiting yachts on the Inside Passage. Contact Ketchikan Harbormaster for availability.
- City of Sitka Harbors (Sitka) — Several harbors with transient slips. Popular stop with good services and proximity to excellent cruising grounds.
- Auke Bay Harbor / Statter Harbor (Juneau) — Main transient and long-term options near Juneau. Statter is often used by larger vessels.
- Petersburg North Harbor (Petersburg) — Well-regarded for transient and longer-term moorage.
- Seward Small Boat Harbor (Seward) — Primary harbor for Southcentral Alaska, with access to Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords.
Reservations are highly recommended in peak season (May–September). Many harbors are operated by local municipalities. Check the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities or individual city harbormaster offices for current rates and availability.
Marine Surveyors
Alaska has a limited number of resident accredited marine surveyors. Many boat owners use surveyors based in Washington state or arrange for fly-in surveys.
- Local & Regional Surveyors — Check the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter for Alaska or the Pacific Northwest.
- Many experienced surveyors from the Seattle/Puget Sound area regularly work in Southeast Alaska during the cruising season.
When buying a boat in Alaska, allow extra time and budget for a qualified surveyor to travel to the vessel's location.
Brokerages
- Alaska Boat Brokers — One of the largest and longest-established brokerages in the state. Offices/brokers covering Ketchikan to Kodiak and Anchorage area. Good resource for both power and sail.
- Many Alaska listings also appear on national platforms such as YachtWorld and BoatTrader.
The Alaska sailboat market is relatively small. Buyers often work with brokers in Washington or British Columbia as well.
