⛵ Arkansas — Sailing Resources

Arkansas offers excellent sailing on large, scenic Ozark lakes—especially Lake Ouachita (one of the cleanest in the country, ~40,000 acres), Greers Ferry Lake, Lake Hamilton, Beaver Lake, and others. These USACE and state reservoirs provide good wind, beautiful anchorages, and a more relaxed cruising/racing scene than coastal areas. Expect hot humid summers, strong afternoon winds, and great fall sailing.

Boater Education

Age rules apply (e.g., minimum 12 for boats 10 HP+, 16 for PWC with supervision options). Card is lifetime and recognized for reciprocity in many states. See AGFC site for current course schedules and approved providers (Boat-Ed etc.).

Marinas & Harbors

Lake Ouachita is the standout for serious sailing in Arkansas — large, clear, and surrounded by national forest with limited private docks (USACE lake). Greers Ferry Lake is another favorite with an active racing scene. Many marinas offer transient slips; call ahead as some are more powerboat-oriented.

USACE lakes like Ouachita prohibit most private docks, which keeps the shoreline natural and the water exceptionally clean. Summer heat and humidity are intense—many sailors prefer spring and fall. Check lake levels and wind forecasts; afternoon thermals are common.

Marine Surveyors

Arkansas has a limited number of resident accredited surveyors. For the most current list, use the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter for Arkansas. Many owners also use surveyors based in Missouri, Tennessee, or Oklahoma who travel to the major lakes.

Brokerages

Arkansas has a relatively small dedicated sailboat brokerage scene. Most current sailboat listings appear on national platforms: YachtWorld and BoatTrader. Local marine dealers around Hot Springs, Heber Springs, and Mountain Home can also be good contacts.

Sailing Clubs & Resources

Lake Ouachita and Greers Ferry Lake are the two primary centers for organized sailing. Many sailors trailer from Little Rock, Hot Springs, or northwest Arkansas. The scene is friendly and low-key compared to bigger coastal yacht clubs.
