⛵ Georgia — Sailing Resources
Georgia offers two very different sailing worlds: the large freshwater reservoir Lake Lanier (one of the most active sailing lakes in the Southeast, near Atlanta) and the coastal waters around Savannah, Brunswick, and the Golden Isles. Lake Lanier is the clear center of organized sailing in the state.
Boater Education
- Georgia DNR Boating Education — Required for anyone born on or after January 1, 1998 who operates a motorized vessel. The certificate can now be added as an endorsement on your Georgia driver’s license/ID.
Approved courses are available online and in-person. Non-residents with a NASBLA-approved card from another state are generally exempt. Carry proof or have the endorsement on your license.
Marinas & Harbors
Lake Lanier (north of Atlanta) is by far the most active sailing venue in Georgia, with a large sailing club and multiple full-service marinas. Coastal options exist around Savannah and the Golden Isles but are more limited for pure sailboats.
Lake Lanier (Primary Sailing Hub)
- Lake Lanier Sailing Club (Flowery Branch) — Very active club with protected wet slips, dry storage, racing, cruising, and junior programs. One of the best-organized sailing communities in the Southeast.
- Holiday Marina (Buford) — Large Suntex marina with hundreds of slips (up to 100 ft), good for bigger sailboats, fuel, and services.
- Sunrise Cove Marina (Gainesville area) — Popular with sailors, covered and open slips, ship store.
- University Yacht Club (Flowery Branch) — Private club with wet slips, dry storage, and a strong sailing/racing program.
Coastal Georgia
- Savannah / Thunderbolt / Wilmington Island area — Several marinas along the Wilmington River with access to the ICW and Atlantic. Good for coastal cruising.
- Brunswick / St. Simons / Jekyll Island — Limited but functional options for sailors heading south on the ICW or exploring the Golden Isles.
Transient slips on Lake Lanier can be competitive in summer. Many owners trailer boats from the Atlanta metro. Coastal Georgia has fewer dedicated sailboat facilities than Florida or the Carolinas.
Marine Surveyors
- Marine Surveyors of North Georgia — Covers Lake Lanier, Lake Allatoona, Lake Oconee, Lake Hartwell and surrounding waters. Pre-purchase and insurance surveys.
- Marine1 Surveying (Marietta area) — SAMS accredited, serves the greater Atlanta / North Georgia lake region.
- Wainui Marine Surveying — Serves Savannah, Brunswick, St. Simons and coastal Georgia (NAMS Associate).
- Additional surveyors from South Carolina and Florida frequently work in coastal Georgia.
Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter for Georgia. Lake Lanier has several local options; coastal Georgia often draws from neighboring states.
Brokerages
Georgia has a relatively small dedicated sailboat brokerage scene. Most activity happens through private sales or brokers based in Florida or South Carolina.
- Search current listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader.
- Some Lake Lanier and coastal dealers handle brokerage on a limited basis.
Lake Lanier has a very active used boat market, especially for trailerable and small cruising sailboats.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Lake Lanier Sailing Club (LLSC) — The largest and most active sailing club in Georgia. Racing, cruising, junior sailing, and social programs on one of the Southeast’s premier sailing lakes.
- University Yacht Club (Lake Lanier) — Private club with strong sailing and racing focus.
- Barefoot Sailing Club — Active group on Lake Lanier focused on racing and cruising.
- Coastal Georgia has fewer dedicated sailing clubs; many sailors participate through yacht clubs in Savannah or the Golden Isles.
- Georgia Sailing Clubs — US Sailing
Lake Lanier is the clear center of organized sailing in Georgia. The Atlanta metro area produces a large number of active sailors who trailer or keep boats on the lake.
