⛵ Idaho — Sailing Resources
Idaho offers excellent freshwater sailing on two of the largest and most scenic lakes in the Northwest: Lake Coeur d’Alene and Lake Pend Oreille (the second deepest lake in the United States). These mountain lakes provide protected waters with spectacular scenery, though the season is short and afternoon winds can be strong.
Boater Education
- Idaho State Parks & Recreation Boating Safety — Idaho has no statewide mandatory boater education requirement for operators. Courses are strongly recommended and free in-person classes plus home study/online options are available. PWC renters must receive education in some cases. Certain counties (e.g., Benewah, Bonner, Kootenai) have minimum age rules.
Approved courses are offered through Idaho State Parks. A certificate can help with insurance discounts and is required when boating in states that mandate education.
Marinas & Harbors
Idaho’s best sailing is on two large northern lakes. Lake Coeur d’Alene has the most developed marina infrastructure. Lake Pend Oreille offers deeper, more open water for serious sailing. Transient space exists but is limited; many facilities are seasonal.
Lake Coeur d’Alene
- Hagadone Marine Group (multiple locations) — Over 1,300 slips across several marinas with annual, seasonal, and overnight options (covered and uncovered). Good transient availability at The Boardwalk Marina and Silver Beach Marina.
- Black Rock Marina (Rockford Bay) — Full-service public marina offering seasonal moorage for 20–40 ft boats (covered and uncovered), rentals, and services on the south end of the lake.
- Lakeside Marina (Coeur d’Alene) — Convenient downtown-area access, used by boat clubs and transients.
- Panhandle Yacht Club — Private club marina with family-oriented slips and amenities.
Lake Pend Oreille
- Windbag Marina (Sandpoint) — City marina with slips and good access for the Sandpoint Sailing Association. Popular base for northern lake sailing.
- Bayview area — Home to the Lake Pend Oreille Yacht Club with racing and cruising focus on the deeper southern waters.
Summer afternoons often bring strong winds on both lakes. Many owners trailer boats from the Spokane or Boise areas. Transient slips are more available mid-week; call ahead for weekends and holidays.
Marine Surveyors
- Idaho has a limited number of resident accredited surveyors. Many owners use surveyors based in Washington (Spokane area) or Montana who regularly travel to northern Idaho lakes.
- Check the official SAMS and NAMS directories and filter for Idaho or the Inland Northwest.
When buying on Lake Coeur d’Alene or Pend Oreille, allow extra time for a surveyor to travel. Local marinas and yacht clubs can often provide current recommendations.
Brokerages
Idaho has a small sailboat brokerage market. Most activity occurs through private sales or brokers based in Washington or Montana.
- Search current listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader.
- Some local dealers around Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint handle brokerage on a limited basis.
The used sailboat market is active on Lake Coeur d’Alene and Pend Oreille, especially for trailerable and small cruising boats.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Lake Pend Oreille Yacht Club (Bayview) — Friendly club focused on racing, cruising, and socializing on one of Idaho’s most scenic lakes.
- Sandpoint Sailing Association (Sandpoint) — Active nonprofit with J/24 and Capri fleets, PHRF racing, regattas (including Spud Cup), and sailing lessons out of Windbag Marina.
- Panhandle Yacht Club (Lake Coeur d’Alene) — Private club marina with a family-oriented sailing and boating community.
- Idaho Sailing Clubs — US Sailing
Northern Idaho has the strongest organized sailing scene. The short season (roughly May–October) and beautiful mountain lakes make it a special place for trailer-sailors and small-cruiser owners.
