⛵ Massachusetts - Sailing Resources
Massachusetts has one of the most active and historic sailing communities on the East Coast. Marblehead is legendary as the "Yachting Capital of the World" with a dense fleet and serious racing. Boston Harbor provides urban access plus the Boston Harbor Islands. Cape Cod, Buzzards Bay, and the Islands (Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket) deliver world-class cruising with protected sounds and open-water passages. Expect busy harbors, competitive transients in summer, strong currents in places, and classic New England conditions.
Boater Education
- Massachusetts Environmental Police (MEP) Boating Safety Certificate - Starting April 1, 2026, a valid boater safety certificate is required for ALL operators of motorboats and personal watercraft in Massachusetts waters. Carry proof while underway. Phased rollout: Born after January 1, 1989 must obtain by April 1, 2026 (penalties begin Sept 1, 2026); those born on or before Jan 1, 1989 have until April 1, 2028.
Approved courses are available online (Boat-Ed.com/massachusetts and other NASBLA-approved providers) and in-person through the Massachusetts Environmental Police and partners. Minimum age typically 12 for the course. The certificate is lifetime. In-person classes are often low-cost or free in some communities. Check mass.gov for current enrollment and the official FAQ.
Marinas & Harbors
Boston Harbor, the North Shore (especially Marblehead and Salem), South Shore, Cape Cod, and the Islands are the main hubs. Many popular spots (particularly Marblehead and the Islands) rely heavily on moorings with launch service rather than slips. Dockwa is widely used for reservations; book early for July–August and holiday weekends.
Boston Harbor
- Constitution Marina (Charlestown) - Protected harbor slips, transients via Dockwa, excellent location steps from TD Garden, North End, and downtown Boston. Popular with visiting sailors and events.
- Charlestown Marina (Boston Harbor) - Modern facility with transients; good access to harbor and islands.
- Boston Harbor Islands public moorings (Spectacle, Georges, Peddocks) - Bookable via Dockwa through MA DCR/Boston Harbor Now. Great for exploring the islands by sail; limited services but scenic and protected.
North Shore (Marblehead, Salem, Beverly)
- Beverly Port Marina (Beverly) - Slips and rack storage; direct access to good sailing waters on the North Shore.
- Salem Harbor / Pickering Wharf Marina (Salem) - Historic harbor with transient slips; convenient to downtown Salem.
- Marblehead Harbor - Iconic "Yachting Capital" fleet. Primarily moorings served by launches from the major yacht clubs (Boston YC, Eastern YC, Marblehead YC, Corinthian YC). Limited transient slips; contact clubs or harbormaster for options. Town landing and beaches for dinghy access. Very active racing scene.
South Shore, Cape Cod & Buzzards Bay
- Hingham Shipyard Marinas - South Shore classic waterfront with transients.
- Hyannis Marina (Hyannis) - Large resort-style marina, transients, central location for Cape and islands access; full services.
- Falmouth, Chatham, and other Cape harbors - Multiple options for transients and moorings; good jumping-off points to the Islands or Buzzards Bay.
- Wareham / Buzzards Bay area - Protected waters; near local manufacturers like Schaefer Marine.
The Islands (Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket)
- Vineyard Haven Marina (Martha's Vineyard) - Premier transients with upscale amenities; book via Dockwa. Other options: Black Dog Wharf, Tisbury Wharf.
- Edgartown (Martha's Vineyard) - Moorings primarily through Edgartown Harbormaster (Dockwa); limited transient dockage at North Wharf, Harborside Inn, Mad Max Marina. Highly scenic and popular.
- Nantucket Town Piers - Among the most sought-after (and competitive) transients on the East Coast. Reserve well in advance; very limited space in peak season.
Dockwa is the go-to for most Massachusetts transients and island moorings. Nantucket and Edgartown fill extremely fast in summer. Marblehead sailors often live on moorings with launch service. Boston Harbor Islands moorings are a fantastic, affordable way to cruise the harbor without a marina slip. Always confirm depths and services for your boat.
Marine Surveyors
- Accurate Marine Surveyors (Capt. Andrews, SAMS AMS) - North Shore through Cape Cod coverage.
- Jims Marine Survey (James Sanborn, SAMS AMS) - Cape Cod specialist.
- James Igoe Marine Survey (SAMS AMS) - Southern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Cape Cod.
- Mystic River Marine Surveyors - Boston area to Cape Cod.
Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories filtered for Massachusetts. The dense sailing population around Boston, Marblehead, and the Cape supports many accredited surveyors. Local yacht clubs and boatyards (especially in Marblehead and on the Cape) can provide current recommendations.
Brokerages
- Boston Yacht Sales (Weymouth, Marblehead, Falmouth) - Long-established; Sabre Yachts dealer with strong regional sailboat inventory.
- New Wave Yachts (Marblehead) - Dehler, Hanse, and Sabre dealer; active North Shore brokerage.
- Capstan Yachts (Cape Cod) - Cape-focused brokerage and sales.
- Search current Massachusetts sailboat listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader. Marblehead, the South Shore, and Cape Cod have particularly active used markets.
Massachusetts has a healthy mix of performance, cruiser, and classic sailboats on the market. Marblehead and Cape yards are frequent sources of well-maintained listings.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Boston Yacht Club (Marblehead) - Active racing, cruising, and community; volunteer-driven with a strong Marblehead presence and launch service.
- Eastern Yacht Club (Marblehead) - One of the oldest and most distinguished yacht clubs in America (est. 1870); elegant facility overlooking the historic harbor with deep racing and cruising traditions.

Marblehead's concentration of historic clubs (Boston, Eastern, Marblehead, Corinthian) creates one of the most intense one-design and offshore racing scenes in the country. Many clubs welcome guests or offer reciprocal privileges. The Cape and Islands have more relaxed but still active fleets. Local manufacturers worth knowing: Schaefer Marine (Wareham - deck hardware) and New England Ropes (Fall River - lines).
