⛵ Maryland - Sailing Resources
Maryland's Chesapeake Bay is one of the premier cruising grounds on the East Coast — hundreds of miles of protected water, rivers, creeks, and anchorages with centuries of sailing history. Annapolis is the sailing capital of the Bay (and often called the sailing capital of the U.S.), home to major boat shows, the Naval Academy, and dense marine services. Busy commercial traffic, shoals, and powerboat wakes require vigilance; excellent for daysailing, racing, and longer cruises to the Eastern Shore or south.
Boater Education
- Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Boating Safety - Anyone born after July 1, 1972 must successfully complete a NASBLA-approved Boating Safety Course and carry the certificate of boating safety education while operating a numbered or documented motorized vessel (including sailboats with auxiliary power) or PWC on Maryland waters. Certificate is lifetime. No minimum age to take the course.
Official courses via Boat-Ed (boat-ed.com/maryland) and other NASBLA-approved providers (including free BoatUS options). Exemptions for USCG-licensed commercial operators and qualifying out-of-state visitors (generally 60 days or less with home-state compliance or age 16+ with prior course). Always carry proof.
Marinas & Harbors
Annapolis (Spa Creek and Back Creek/Eastport) is the hub with the highest concentration of services and transients. The West River (Shady Side), Eastern Shore (Oxford, St. Michaels, Cambridge), and Solomons Island also offer strong options. Use Dockwa for many reservations; call ahead for peak weekends and boat-show periods. Shoal-draft boats have advantages in many creeks.
Annapolis & Severn / Back Creek Area
- Port Annapolis Marina (Annapolis / Eastport, Back Creek) - Full-service marina with transients, repairs, haul-out, amenities including pool, lounge, Wet Dog Café, laundry, and fitness. Quick access to the Bay with no bridge.
- Bert Jabin Yacht Yard (Annapolis, Back Creek) - Large certified clean marina, transients, extensive services and yard work; popular with visitors and locals.
- South Annapolis Yacht Centre (Spa Creek area) - Modern slips up to large sizes, floating piers, strong power infrastructure, transients via Dockwa.
- Annapolis Town Dock and nearby public/guest slips - Central but limited; good for short visits and access to downtown and City Dock.
West River & South of Annapolis
- Chesapeake Yacht Club (Shady Side, West River) - Gated, secure 142-slip marina (boats to 70 ft), professionally staffed, transients via Dockwa, clubhouse amenities. Convenient to Annapolis and lower Bay.
- Other West River and Deale-area marinas (e.g., Norris Marina, Harbour Cove) - Good transients and services; popular for those seeking a bit more space than central Annapolis.
Eastern Shore & Other
- Oxford and St. Michaels area - Charming historic ports with marinas (including options tied to Dimillo's Oxford and local yards); excellent for cruising the Miles River and Choptank. Transients available but seasonal.
- Cambridge Yacht Basin and nearby - Dockwa-supported, good access for larger stretches of the Bay.
- Solomons Island area - Protected harbor with multiple marinas and yards; popular stop heading south or for lower Bay exploration.
Dockwa and Snag-A-Slip cover many Chesapeake options. Annapolis gets very busy around boat shows (spring and fall) and summer weekends — book early. Many marinas cater to both power and sail; confirm depths and beam restrictions. The Bay's commercial traffic (tugs, ships) and frequent powerboat chop are important considerations for sailors.
Marine Surveyors
- Saltwater Analytics Marine Surveyors (Stevensville) - SAMS-accredited, serves Annapolis, Stevensville, Edgewater, Deale, Rock Hall and greater Chesapeake Bay. Pre-purchase, C&V, and insurance surveys.
- Corsica River Marine Surveys (Travis L. Palmer, SAMS AMS, ABYC) - Annapolis-based; surveys throughout Maryland to Central Florida and East Coast. Pre-purchase and condition surveys.
- Hartoft Marine Survey Ltd. (Annapolis area) - Long-established local surveyor.
- Additional accredited options via directories (many SAMS/NAMS members concentrated around Annapolis and the Bay).
The Annapolis/Chesapeake region has one of the highest densities of professional marine surveyors on the East Coast. Use the SAMS and NAMS finders filtered for Maryland. Annapolis YC, Eastport YC, and local yards are good sources for current recommendations. Many surveyors travel the entire Bay and Eastern Shore.
Brokerages
Annapolis has one of the densest concentrations of sailboat brokerages and marine businesses anywhere on the East Coast. The used and new sailboat market is very active year-round.
- Search current listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader — filter by Annapolis, Eastern Shore, etc.
- Numerous local Annapolis and Bay-area brokers handle Catalina, Beneteau, Hunter, J/Boats, and larger cruising yachts. Many are affiliated with yards or located in Eastport/Back Creek.
- Eastern Shore brokerages (Oxford, St. Michaels, Cambridge) serve the classic and cruising market.
Boat shows in Annapolis are prime times to meet brokers and see inventory in person. The Bay's large sailing population supports a steady flow of listings from daysailers to bluewater cruisers.
