⛵ Michigan - Sailing Resources
Michigan has more freshwater coastline than any other U.S. state. Northern Michigan (Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, Harbor Springs on Little Traverse Bay and Grand Traverse Bay) is the premier Great Lakes sailing destination with protected waters and easy access to open Lake Michigan. The Straits of Mackinac and car-free Mackinac Island are legendary stops. The Detroit River / Lake St. Clair area offers urban sailing and starts famous long-distance races. West Michigan (Grand Haven, Muskegon, Holland, South Haven) provides solid Lake Michigan access. Expect big water potential, sudden weather changes, and cold water — solid seamanship required.
Boater Education
- Michigan DNR Boating Safety Certificate - Required for anyone born on or after July 1, 1996 who operates a motorized vessel. Also required for PWC operators born after December 31, 1978. Must carry the boater education certificate while operating. Michigan DNR-approved courses (online and in-person).
Courses available through Boat-Ed.com/michigan and other approved providers, plus volunteer instructor classes via DNR and sheriff departments. The certificate is lifetime once earned. Check the official DNR site for current enrollment, volunteer courses, and requirements. No general operator license, but the education card is mandatory for covered operators.
Marinas & Harbors
Northern Lower Michigan and the Straits are the sailing heartland. Many popular spots (especially Mackinac Island and Harbor Springs) require advance reservations in peak summer. Dockwa is used at many private marinas; Michigan DNR handles reservations for many state harbors. West Michigan and the southeast (Lake St. Clair/Detroit) offer additional options with different cruising flavors.
Northern Michigan & Little Traverse / Grand Traverse Bays
- Harbor Springs Municipal Marina (Harbor Springs, Little Traverse Bay) - Transients available; scenic, protected deep harbor. Popular base for northern Lake Michigan cruising.
- Irish Boat Shop (Harbor Springs and Charlevoix) - Full-service with transient and seasonal dockage, sales, and repairs. Long-established (since 1961) hub for sailors.
- Charlevoix City Marina (Charlevoix) - Floating docks, transients, boaters' lounge, downtown access. Gateway to Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan.
- Petoskey City Marina (Petoskey) - Transient slips on Little Traverse Bay.
- Boyne City Marina (Lake Charlevoix) - Municipal options on the big inland lake connected to the big lake.
Straits of Mackinac & Mackinac Island
- Mackinac Island State Harbor / Marina (Mackinac Island) - Legendary public marina operated by the State Park. Transient slips (up to ~74 ft), pump-out, restrooms/showers, Wi-Fi; mid-May to mid-October. Highly competitive — reserve early. Car-free island with famous fudge and views under the bridge.
- Mackinaw City Municipal Marina (Mackinaw City) - 100+ slips, transients up to 100 ft, fuel, pump-out; convenient to the bridge and ferries. Good staging point.
West Michigan (Lake Michigan Shore)
- Grand Haven Municipal Marina (Grand Haven) - Popular transient destination with boardwalk access; DNR reservations for many slips.
- Muskegon area (Safe Harbor Great Lakes, Hartshorn, Bluffton Bay, Harbour Towne) - Deep port options, transients, good protection inside Muskegon Lake.
- Holland and South Haven municipal marinas - Multiple locations with transients; South Haven has sail-friendly Maritime Marina and DNR-reservable slips. Solid stops heading north or south on the lake.
Southeast Michigan / Lake St. Clair / Detroit River
- Windmill Pointe Park Marina (Grosse Pointe Park) - Transients on Lake St. Clair; resident/non-resident rates.
- St. Clair Shores / Lake St. Clair Metropark Marina and area harbors - Good transient options and launch access to the big shallow lake (excellent for daysailing/racing).
- St. Clair Boat Harbor (St. Clair River) - Transients on the river connecting to Lake Huron.
- Bayview Yacht Club (Detroit River) - Offers transient dockage (call ahead); deep water slips, pump-out, showers. Prime location for race starts.
Reservations are essential for Mackinac Island, Harbor Springs, and many northern harbors July–August. Michigan DNR state harbors (midnrreservations.com or 800-44-PARKS) are reliable for transients. Dockwa and Snag-A-Slip cover many private facilities. Great Lakes sailing means watching weather closely — conditions can build fast on the big lakes.
Marine Surveyors
- Bluefin Marine Consultants (SAMS & NAMS) - West Michigan coverage from Muskegon to Traverse City area.
- Downriver Marine Surveyors (Les Salliotte, SAMS AMS) - Detroit area and southeast Michigan.
- CAS Marine Surveyor (Christian Syoen, SAMS) - Southeast Michigan focus.
Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories filtered for Michigan. Surveyors often travel across the state or between the lakes; northern MI and Detroit metro have the strongest concentrations. Local boatyards and yacht clubs (Bayview, Irish Boat Shop, Walstrom) are good sources for current recommendations.
Brokerages
- Irish Boat Shop (Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, Traverse City) - Major northern Michigan player with brokerage, new/used sail and power, dockage, and service since 1961.
- Walstrom Marine (Charlevoix) - 80+ years; premier northern Michigan brokerage and full-service yard.
- Lake Michigan Yacht Sales (Charlevoix) - Active northern brokerage.
- Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales (Charlevoix and other MI locations) - Long-established Great Lakes brokerage.
- HarborView Yacht Sales - 50+ years serving the Great Lakes.
YachtWorld and BoatTrader are essential for current Michigan sailboat listings. The northern Michigan yards (Irish, Walstrom) and southeast dealers move a lot of both performance and cruising boats. The used market is active for boats that sail the Lakes or head south via the rivers/canals.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Bayview Yacht Club (Detroit) - Premier sailing club on the Detroit River since 1915; hosts the famous Bayview Mackinac Race (Port Huron to Mackinac Island, one of the longest freshwater races). Strong racing, cruising, and social programs; transient dockage available (call harbor ops).
- Little Traverse Yacht Club (Harbor Springs area) - Active northern club with racing and cruising on Little Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan.
- Charlevoix Yacht Club (Charlevoix) - Local racing and cruising focus.
- Port Huron Yacht Club (Port Huron) - Historic club at the start of the Bayview Mac race.
- Additional clubs around Traverse City, Grosse Pointe / Crescent Sail Yacht Club (sail-only on Lake St. Clair), and west Michigan support vibrant local fleets.
- Michigan Sailing Clubs - US Sailing
The two big offshore events are the Bayview Mackinac Race (Port Huron start) and the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. Northern Michigan has a very active one-design and cruising scene. Many clubs welcome guests for events or offer reciprocal privileges. Lake St. Clair is a racer's paradise with consistent wind and shallow draft-friendly waters in many areas.
